Former student defends Starr's Mill teacher, Voyles

I know I speak for many of my old classmates when I say that Laura Voyles is a wonderful teacher as well as a friend.

After knowing her for nearly five years now and [having] moved on to college, I look back and realize just how great she truly was. She would always go the extra mile to ensure a student succeeds. Whether it was getting help formulating clear topics for essays or the mandatory meetings to talk about our thoughts and concerns with the class, Mrs. Voyles honestly cared for each and every one of her students that, consequently, created a more enjoyable learning atmosphere.

After attending another high school for my freshman year and then going to Starr's Mill, I instantly noticed something. Starr's Mill has always prided itself on its exceptional student-teacher relationship.

Most teachers remained in their classrooms after school to provide any extra help, and every student saw them not as just teachers, but as a friend, and felt comfortable around them.

In the aftermath of all of this, that one thing that set Starr's Mill apart from the rest will cease to exist in fear of creating suspicion in parents who are not used to a teacher caring about their student's success.

Furthermore, I find it very upsetting that people are already considering her guilty based merely on the parent's "suspicion." Those of us who have known her for years realize exactly what a remarkable lady she is and will stand behind her through it all. The true losers are the students who will miss out on the opportunity to learn from one of the most talented and outstanding teachers in the country.
