'Tis the season of dance

There are many ways to make merry during the holiday season, but none as seemingly popular as dancing.

Many local dance companies have performed "The Nutcracker" in the past several weeks. Fayette Ballet will present its version this weekend and Classical Dance Theatre will present a holiday concert featuring selections from the timeless holiday classic.

Classical Dance Theatre, the south side's newest dance studio, will perform Saturday, Dec. 15 at Creekside High School in Fairburn. There will be two performances Saturday, one at 2:30 p.m. and the other at 7:30 p.m. The show, choreographed by studio founder Yasmine Hassaan and Classical Dance Theatre instructor Candess Giyan, will feature dancers from the studio as well as professional dancers from throughout metro Atlanta.

The school, which opened in September, offers training in ballet, jazz, modern and tap for children and adults at every experience level.

"We have a program that will entertain all ages," said hassaan. "We hope the Holiday concert becomes an annual tradition and a highlight of the holiday season for residents of the south side."

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children and seniors. They can be purchased at the door as well as in advance at the studio or from any of the performers.

Fayette Ballet will present "The Nutcracker" for the 14th consecutive year. The production continues to grow and will feature Rebecca Jernigan and Patrick turner as Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, as well as soloists and principal dancers of the Fayette Ballet and a cast of 125 area children and adults. Katheleen Senger is the artistic director for the show, which features a growing Christmas tree, falling snow, lavish sets, costume and scenery and a 22-foot Chinese dragon.

"We are especially pleased with our efforts this year and promise a professional and enchanting 'Nutcracker' production," said Senger. "Our audiences no longer have to drive into Atlanta or Macon to see good, professional dance at affordable prices for the family."

The show will be presented at Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville, Dec. 14-16. Tickets are $8 for children and seniors, $10 for adults and $12.50 for preferred seating. There is a special family package available giving reserved seating for six for $37. Tickets are available at Regions Bank in Peachtree City and Fayetteville and the School of Performing Arts in Peachtree City and Fayetteville.

Advanced reservations may be made by calling Fayette Ballet at 770-631-4928 or 770-461-0976. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Not having anything to do with battling mice is an Irish dance show. The McGrath Academy of Irish Dance and the O'Griffin School of Irish Dance merged as of Nov. 25. Under the artistic direction of Jeanne McGrath Pearson, TCRG, and class instructors John F. McGrath, Patrick J. McGrath and Barbara O'Griffin Revere, Fayetteville and Peachtree City are among several locations for their traditional school of Irish Dance.

The group also will present a performance of Irish step dance, music, singing and poetry at Starr's Mill High School Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Tickets at the door will be $1 more.
