'This Is Christmas' tells of true meaning of holiday By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Though the Christmas holiday has taken on Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and other assorted characters and traditions, the holiday is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The story of the Nativity, which tells of his birth, is presented by many churches and groups each year. This year, Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, in conjunction with Fayette Community Theatre Inc., will present "This Is Christmas," a Nativity play for children. The students from the second through eighth grade classes at Our Lady of Victory star in the show and also designed much of the set. The play, written by Rita Coleman, features many classic Christmas songs, including "Little Drummer Boy." The Nativity story begins with the angel Gabriel telling Mary that God has chosen her to have a special baby. This baby is Jesus, God's son. Mary and her husband Joseph travel to Bethlehem, only to find that there is no room at any of the inns. An innkeeper allows Mary and Joseph to use his manger and that is where Mary gives birth to Jesus. Soon, many people know of Jesus' birth and they rejoice. Three kings travel to find Jesus and present him with gifts. However, the three kings go to the wrong place first, the palace of King Herod, and Herod is angered when he hears that this boy will be king. He orders all of the babies in Bethlehem to be killed, but, thanks to an angel appearing in a dream, Jesus, Mary and Joseph escape to Egypt. "This Is Christmas" will be presented in the cafeteria of Our Lady of Victory Catholic School. Performances will be Thursday, Dec. 13 through Sunday, Dec. 16. Thursday's performance will be free for Our Lady of Victory parents and faculty. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 for children and $5 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 770-631-8568.
