Tigers take third place at South Metro wrestling tournament

The South Metro Invitational, a wreslting meet featuring a number of teams from the area, took place at Spalding High School last weekend. Eagle's Landing edged out Woodward Academy to take first place in the tournament , while Fayette County finished third. Other local teams competing were East Coweta, which finished sixth, while McIntosh finished seventh, Starr's Mill finished eighth and Sandy creek placed 17th.

Fayette County had eight medalists in the tournament. Chris Leslie, 215, and James Bouie, 275, both finished in first place, while Will Barnes, 189, Stephen McElrath, 119, and Matt Kellerman, 125, placed third. Patrick Kellerman, 145, and Joe Strickland, 160, placed fifth while Adam Pisarcik, 135, placed sixth. Fayette County will compete in the Brookwood Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

McIntosh finished with five medalists. Justin Edwards, 130, placed second, while Ryan Winter, 103, and Faawaz Marouff, 135, placed third. Brad Luce, 152, placed fifth and Shawn Tupper, 160, placed sixth. McIntosh is a fairly young team, with only five seniors and one junior wrestling for the team. Coach Nick Bellantoni knows his team still has a lot to learn and needs to get better, but sees them being strong in the area. McIntosh will host a duals meet against Fayette County, LaGrange and Mt. Zion, Jonesboro today at 5 p.m. and will host the McIntosh Christmas Classic on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Starr's Mill also had five medalists. Dustin Lyle, 145, placed second, while Kyle Veresello, 160, placed third. Michael Kosper, 112, and Scott Hartpence, 140, placed fourth and Michael Burke, 135 placed fifth. Sandy Creek's Brandon McDowell, 171, placed sixth. Starr's Mill faced Columbia, Marietta and Woodward Academy at Woodward yesterday and will host their Christmas tournament on Friday and Saturday. Sandy Creek will host Heritage, Troup County and McNair today at 5 p.m. and will compete in the Landmark Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
