Landmark students excel in merit program

Landmark Christian School senior Matthew Tennihan, a resident of Newnan, has been named a semifinalist in the 2002 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Senior students are eligible for this honor based on their 2000 PSAT scores.

Semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of students who took the test and are the highest scoring in their state.

From the 1.2 million program entrants, 16,000 semifinalists were chosen.

To become a finalist, Tennihan must meet academic standards in college preparatory work, submit SAT scores supporting the PSAT results, and be fully endorsed and recommended by his high school principal. He must complete a detailed scholarship application, write an essay about activities, interests and goals, and a school official must provide his academic record, information about curricula and grading system, and a written characterization and recommendation.

The National Merit Scholarship Competition will announce the scholarship winners in the spring. Tennihan has already been offered a full tuition and fees scholarship to Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss., in addition to consideration by the NMSC.

Two other Landmark students were recognized as commended students in the National Merit Program. Preston Heard of Peachtree City, and Genny Keywood of Douglasville were among the top 5 percent of students who entered the competition.
