The high school wrestling season began last week and the local teams should be competitive once again.

Sandy Creek faced Mt. Zion, Jonesboro, Newnan and Eagle's landing on Friday. The Patriots went 0-3 losing to Mt. Zion 39-36, Newnan 48-30 and Eagles Landing 77-0. Five wrestlers went 2-1 for Sandy Creek; Thomas Whitley (125), Chris Denney (119), Joey Singleton (130), Nick Dorsey (160) and Brandon McDowell (171).

Coach Damian Belvedere took only seven wrestlers to the I-285 Duals and sent the rest to a junior varsity meet. The Patriots placed seventh out of 10 teams, but went 19-11 in matches actually wrestled. Sandy Creek defeated MLK, 42-12, and Dunwoody, 33-30. The Patriots lost to Columbia, 54-6, St. Pius, 49-27 and Towers, 54-26. The five wrestlers who went 2-1 the day before went 4-1 on Saturday.

"I was pleased on Saturday," said Coach Belvedere. "We went 6-0 against MLK, 4-2 against Towers, 5-2 against St. Pius and 4-1 against Dunwoody. When we get all the weights filled we should be somewhat competitive."

Sandy Creek faced Jonesboro, Westlake and Landmark Christian yesterday and will compete in the South Metro wrestling meet at Spaulding High School in Griffin on Friday and Saturday. Fayette County, McIntosh and Starr's Mill will also be competing in the meet. Favorites for the tournament are defending champion Woodward Academy and Eagles Landing.

The Fayette County High School wrestlers won the Warhawk duals held at Henry County High School over the weekend. The team went undefeated in dual competition defeating Clarke Central (58-22), Tri Cities (57-24), North Gwinnett (47-22), and Winder-Barrow (48-36). James Bouie, Matt Kellerman, and Joe Strickland all went 4-0 on the weekend with four pins each. Adam Pisarcik was 3-0. Thomas Lowery, Stephen McElrath, Jason Hardwick, and Patrick Kellerman all went 3-1 for the weekend. The Tigers faced Harrison and Douglas County at Harrison last night.
