After realizing life's value, why do we permit abortion?

In the book "Tuesdays with Morrie," the author is taking a class on dying. The professor is suffering with a terminal illness. As he speaks about himself, you come to realize that it is not so much about death but rather life. With every turn of the page the question arises, Can we understand life if we do not understand death?

Unfortunately, we as a nation have experienced death like no other time in our history. As the events of 9/11 loom ever present in our thoughts, I can't help but see the greatest that life has to offer. To see New York firefighters rushing into a burning building putting their very lives at risk in a glorious effort to save others. The stories of men and women caring disabled coworkers down flight after flight of stairs knowing they could be going faster on their own but willing to take that chance to save a life.

The story about the events leading up to the plane crash in Pennsylvania where the passengers were willing to give up there very lives in an effort to prevent an even greater tragedy is unparalleled with anything I have ever known. The words, "Let's roll," will never have the same meaning again.

It is because of these acts of love that I must ask the question: How can we continue to keep abortion legal? Each day in this great nation of ours we kill as many babies as bin Laden and the Al-Qaida network killed on Sept. 11. Like the movie "Groundhog Day," we wake day after day only to repeat the day before. In this case we repeat ourselves by killing 5,000 babies.

Recently a song by Jewel shot to the top of the pop charts. Each time I hear it I visualize an unborn baby singing from within her mother when I hear the artist say, "These hands are small, I know, but they're not yours; they are my own, they're not yours; they are my own."
