Sandy Creek catcher signs with Wingate
By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Carrie Rountree has been a catcher on Sandy Creek High School's varsity softball team for the past four years. Next fall, she will attend Wingate University in North Carolina and will be their starting catcher the following spring. Rountree made the decision official earlier this week. "I really liked the environment, the coaches and the players," said Rountree, who plans on majoring in Sociology at the school. "It's a small school and the professors seem like they'll be really helpful." Rountree has made a lot of memories playing for the Lady Patriots, including hitting two grand slams this past season. The memory that stands out the most for her though is getting the chance to catch in her freshman year. "I was playing first base and our catcher got hurt so I had to go play behind the plate. We were playing Fayette County and I drove in two runs that day. We won 3-2." Rountree, who also plays for the Screamers, a select fast pitch softball team, will finish her senior year in style and play one more summer with the select team before heading to North Carolina to become a Bulldog. Wingate plays in the South Atlantic Conference.
