Thanksgiving is this week and everyone knows that the Christmas season officially begins right after that last piece of pumpkin pie Thursday evening. There are many activities over the next several days kicking off the holiday season.

Peachtree City will have its annual Tree Lighting at a new place this year. The event will be Friday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. at The Avenue and will feature a 45-minute musical program that will include pop songs, Broadway numbers, Christmas carols, gospel and more. The evening will culminate with the lighting of the Peace Tree, which is a 25-foot Japanese Cedar.

And what kind of a Christmas would it be without performances of "The Nutcracker?" The story focuses on Clara and the Nutcracker she receives as a gift. The Nutcracker comes to life in her dreams, fights a battle with evil mice and takes Clara on a magical journey.

Festival Ballet will present "The Nutcracker" at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Advance tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for students. Admission at the door is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $9 for students. The Sunday matinee special allows a free student ticket for every adult ticket purchased.Phone 770-473-2875.

Often the sweetest gifts during the holidays are the ones you make yourself. Children of all ages will get that chance at Art of the Season. Art of the Season is a holiday arts and crafts extravaganza for children and families, offering children more than 30 different crafts and activities to create and take home. The event is a benefit for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta that lets children use their imaginations to create magical wands, colorful sand necklaces, sparkling spaceships and delicious gingerbread houses.

Art of the Season runs from Friday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001; hours are Monday - Saturday, 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Sundays, Noon - 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 and Thursday, Nov. 29, extended hours until 8 p.m. The event is held at the Atlanta Apparel Mart, 250 Spring Street (downtown Atlanta). Admission is $8 for children and adults and includes five activity tickets, which are used at the various craft stations. For recorded information about Art of the Season, phone 404-250-2999

The town of Tyrone will get into the spirit with "A Tyrone Christmas" will take place Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Tyrone Town Hall. Santa will arrive and the tree will be lit. Citizens are asked to bring canned goods to help the Fayette Samaritans.
