The winter season of high school athletics has begun. One sport already off and running is swimming. McIntosh faced Sandy Creek Friday and won 368-96, but there were great performances for both sides.

McIntosh had several swimmers already qualify for the state meet. Hilary White qualified for state in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. Annya Lee qualified in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. White and Lee are also members of the team that won the girls freestyle relay. Other members are Lindsay Lochridge and Asami Mase.

The boys team performed well, despite missing five swimmers. A key for McIntosh was getting good performances from some new swimmers. Chris Lee had two first place finishes and anchored two relays for the boys, while Mike Bowman and Robert Hawkins also swam well. Junko Mase, a new swimmer for the girls, gave a solid effort as well.

McIntosh, coached by Brad Waggoner and Polly Kichefsky, will travel to Agnes Scott College Nov. 30 to take on Decatur.

Sandy Creek broke some school records and nearly qualified for state in several events. Jessica Pratt broke school records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Brian Edwards also broke a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and finished just seconds away from qualifying for state.

The Patriots, coached by Joseph DiGennero and Steven Justice, also got good performances from their relay teams. The 200-yard medley relay team of Pratt, Kristy Marquez, Bethany Ellis and Jessica Harper finished with a time of 2:13, four seconds off qualifying. The 200-yard relay team of Pratt, Ellis, Harper and Christina Wolf is five seconds away from qualifying.
