The start of eating season

By F.C. FOODIE

This week officially starts the season of eating until you bust. For the next weeks, we'll all be inundated with enough holiday goodies to make us start looking for those Atkins Diet books starting in January.

But until then, we need to enjoy the camaraderie the holidays bring us, especially in these troubled times.

Now is traditionally the time to give thanks and reflect on the past year. Without further ado, here are some of the things that Foodie is happy about this year:

·Restaurants like the City Cafe, the Village Cafe and Valentino's. These restaurants show that Fayette Countians are willing to support genuine, independent restaurants in the vast expanse of chain restaurant dining.

·Weekend brunches at Shadows, Original Pancake House and Waffle House. The first two offer a upscale start to your weekend, but sometimes you just have to have 'em scattered, smothered and covered.

·The increase of ethnic dining choices in the county. Thailand of Smiles and Grand Buffet in Fayetteville offer choices that were only a distant dream a few years ago.

·Good bread and coffee on a dreary morning. For years, residents moaned over the lack of good, crusty European bread in the area. Now, Atlanta Bread Company, Starbucks and City Cafe offer a taste of the continent to the Southside.

And finally, I'm most thankful that we live in a country where we have the opportunities to make choices in what we eat, who we worship and how we live. The last two months have shown us that many people don't know what it's like to experience freedom. Let's hope the day is not too far off when everybody can make the same choices.
