Harvest Classic at New Hope a success

New Hope Baptist Church had a 5K run/walk last Saturday, which attracted approximately 120 participants.

Purpose of the event was to raise money for upcoming youth mission trips. Race director Rich Terry, minister of missions at the church, said the goal was to get at least 100 people to run in order to consider the event a success.

Local WVFJ radio personality Sheila Richards emceed the event, keeping the runners entertained and informed as they were warming up. Richards also hosted the awards ceremony, which featured prize giveaways from Kaufmann Tires, T&G All sports, Chick-fil-A and more.

Local cross country and track stand-out John Miklas from Fayette County High School was the overall winner with a time of 17:06. Elise Mendenhall was the overall female winner with 23:44. Harry Moser won the men's Masters Division with a time of 19:55, while Ann Akers was the winner in the women's Masters Division. Akers, 64, was recently featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was profiled in the October edition of Georgia Runner.

In addition to winning trophies, these runners also received $75 gift certificates to T&G Allsports.

Terry is already looking forward to next year's race, which he plans to move up to September to coincide with the World Wide Missions Conference at New Hope.
