Football season nears final week

The regular season of high school football was scheduled to end tonight, but there will be one more week next week, due to games that were postponed after September 11.

Tonight, the big game is East Coweta (8-0) at Newnan (7-1). This is one of the biggest rivalries in the region every year. The Indians are hoping to stay undefeated and take the top playoff spot in the sub-division of Region 4-AAAAA. Newnan would love to play the spoiler and help their playoff hopes along. The Cougars have a tough test tonight and will host Starr's Mill next week. If they get wins in both, they will be battle tested when the palyoffs begin.

Landmark Christian School (5-3) used some razzle dazzle last week in their win against Heard County, running two reverses for touchdowns. It will be interesting to see what the War Eagles have up their sleeves tonight when they host Mt. Zion, Carroll (3-4). Landmark has a solid offense and a defense that can really change the tone of the game.

Sandy Creek (2-6) travels to take on Salem High School tonight. The Patriots produced some big offensive plays last week but saw a number of their drives stall out short of the endzone. They will use that as motivation tonight. The defense which forced several turnovers will play just as hard tonight and the offense, behind leading rusher Kelvin German, will be looking to put points on the board with renewed determination.

Fayette County (5-4) will finish their season by hosting Evans (1-8). The Tigers are pleased to be much improved from last season and would like to continue their winning streak. Fayette County will most likely pull out all the stops as they try to give everybody some playing time and end the season on a high note.

Our Lady of Mercy (5-4) will close out their season by hosting Blessed Trinity tonight. The Bobcats got a big win last week in their homecoming game and will most likely carry over some of those positive feelings tonight.

McIntosh (0-8) lost a heartbreaker last week and will face North Clayton (3-5) at Tara Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Chiefs had some positive things happen last week, including a great defensive effort from Yacov Baum. They will need to play even better this week as North Clayton is much improved.
