PTC Flash lights up at AAU state meet

Twenty-six members of the Peachtree City Flash cross-country team competed in the AAU state meet in Hoganville last weekend.

The 8-under boys and girls captured first place, the 10-under girls finished in second place and out of 18 eligible athletes, 17 qualified for the nationals, which will take place at Disney World in December. The 8-under division is not run in nationals.

Haley Smith finished first for the 8-under girls with a time of 9:11. She was followed by Chelsey Bowman, who finished fourth at 11:47, Christina Rodie, who finished fifth at 12:46 and Rita Steinger who finished sixth at 13:11.

The 8-under boys were lead by Tomoharu Shimada, who finished first at 9:04. Baylen Garrett placed second at 9:10 and Mitchell Miller placed third at 9:11. Ian Roberts placed fifth at 11:47.

The 10-under girls race had two major technical difficulties. The distance was incorrect and both timers malfunctioned. Though there were no official times, the finishes were correct.

Mary Frances Roberts placed third, Shannon Phillips placed sixth, Kie Fujii placed ninth, Kara Markle placed 10th, Mary Herbal placed 13th and Renee Wetli placed 14th. The 10-under boys were led by Justin Jarrell who finished 14th at 14:46. Scott Vermeyen finished 16th at 15:49 and Parker Bachmna finished 17th at 15:49.52.

Fumika Shimada led the 12-under girls with a fifth place finish at 13:53. Whitney Hugueet placed eighth at 14:49 and Kelly Adams finished 11th at 16:18.

Vincent Brown led the 12-under boys, finishing sixth at 12:17. Jonathan Garrett placed ninth at 13:45 and Jake Hainey placed 12th at 15:06.

Lacey Garrett placed seventh in the 14-under girls division, running at 21:04. Katherine Conger placed 10th at 25:32 and Allyson Rodie finished 11th at 29:12.
