Regular season nears final stretch
McIntosh went searching for its first win of the season last Friday and fell just short. The Chiefs hosted the Stockbridge Tigers, also looking for their first win of the season, and lost 14-13. Stockbridge struck first but missed the extra point attempt. The Chiefs then scored 13 unanswered points over the course of the next three quarters with two field goals from Omar Jarun and a five yard touchdown run from Nick Achor. Scott Prah and Yakov Baum each had interceptions for the Chiefs, but it was an interception by Stockbridge, after the Tigers had reclaimed the lead, that had dashed McIntosh's hopes for a last-second win. McIntosh (0-8) will travel to Tara Stadium in Jonesboro Saturday to take on North Clayton (3-5) at 5 p.m. Starr's Mill faced Eagle's Landing last Friday and won 51-6. The Panthers (7-2) scored 20 points in the first quarter and held the Golden Eagles to 115 yards of offense for the entire game. Starr's Mill got touchdowns from Recarta Heard, who had three on the night, Chris Strauch, who had two touchdowns, and Patrick Mullinix who ran 28 yards for a score. Jon Vickers added a field goal for Starr's Mill. The defense produced three fumble recoveries, four sacks and an interception. Starr's Mill gets a bye this week before traveling to Newnan to close out the regular season. The Panthers must defeat the Cougars to make the playoffs. Fayette County won't make the playoffs this year, but they proved they were a much improved team by winning their fifth game of the season last Friday with a 29-13 win over Morrow. The Tigers had touchdown runs from Antonio Barlow and Corey Burton, a touchdown pass from Jeff Crisp to Tyler Watts, two field goals from John Deraney and a safety. One of Deraney's field goals was a 48-yarder, setting a new school record. The Tigers (5-4) end the season Friday as they host Evans (1-8). Sandy Creek's playoff hopes were dashed last Friday as they fell to Rockdale County 17-3. Jenna Thomason gave Sandy Creek its only points of the game as several Patriot drives stalled out. Brett Hodgson, Riley Swanson and Brooks Martin each had a fumble recovery. Rockdale scored one touchdown on a punt return and one on a blocked field goal. Sandy Creek (2-6) travels to take on Salem (3-5) Friday. Landmark Christian (5-3) got back in the win column Friday by defeating Heard County 28-7. Sean Hill scored two touchdowns for the playoff bound War Eagles as he ran in two reverses, one for 83 yards and one for 49 yards. Landmark will host Mt. Zion, Carroll (3-4) Friday. It was a first for many things for the Bobcats of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School. Their first-ever homecoming week ended on a positive note as Mercy found the right formula and beat Walker High 21-12. It was the first time in school history that the football program assured itself of a non-losing record as the Bobcats ran their record to 5-4 (2-1 in varsity competition). Mercy has had their troubles finding the end zone the past four games but Friday night they relied heavily on their ground attack to score three times. The Bobcat defense continued their aggressive and attacking style of play, allowing Walker a touchdown resulting from a fumbled snap that Walker recovered on the Mercy eight yard line and a long run late in the fourth quarter with the games outcome no longer in doubt. Mercy scored first when running back Jeff Smith took a pitch and sprinted down the middle for a 56-yard touchdown. Smith finished the game with 22 carries and 164 rushing yards. The Bobcats also scored on a 1-yard dive from fullback Chris Calle, who recorded 50 yards on 15 carries. The final score came on a quarterback sneak by Ralph Woolfolk to put the game away. The Mercy defense was lead by linebackers Matt Gill and Ryan Sling, as they each recorded 10 tackles. Defensive back Quentin Jones ended a Walker drive with an interception. Mercy will end its season Friday by hosting Blessed Trinity at 7:30 p.m.
