Next year, just put school names in a hat A suggestion for the Fayette County middle schools to avoid confusion during football season next year: Before the season play begins, place each middle school's name on a slip of paper and place them in a hat. Next, let someone reach in the hat and pull out two slips. Right before the season is over, open the slips of paper and announce the first opened is the first-place team and the second opened is the second-place team and that they will proceed to the playoffs. Announce this via e-mail to everyone in the county. Wait long enough for all the kids involved to be notified and then pull out one more slip. This will be the actual first-place team. No explanation is necessary; just let it filter back to the kids and parents who were told they were going to the playoffs. Also, you must have a police officer there as the name is pulled from the hat to make sure no parents or kids witness it. If this is done for a few years, it won't need to be placed in the league by-laws and everyone will just assume it is correct. As happened this year, the actual games won by the first-place team (or should I say the team who won the most games?) won't count for a darn thing, but The Citizen won't have to write two pages explaining what the rules may or may not be. Do not complain if you wind up being the team tossed aside, because then you'll be labeled as someone who doesn't know the real rules of football. You know those rules, don't you? Sorry if you don't, you're out of luck. They're not written down anywhere. With these rules we can only hope everyone involved will have as much fun during next year's football season as Flat Rock did this year. Keely Haynie Fayette
