Football teams look for momentum as season winds down

There are only a few regular season football games left for our local high school teams and, whether the teams are playoff bound or not, every game counts.

Starr's Mill (6-2), which vaulted back into first place in their sub-division last week with a win over McIntosh and Newnan's loss to Riverdale, travels to take on Eagle's Landing (3-4) on Friday. The Panther offense has been running on all cylinders lately and should keep going at full throttle against the Golden Eagles. Add an intense defense to the mix and the Panthers should win handily.

McIntosh (0-7) faces another winless team on Friday when they host the Stockbridge Tigers (0-6). Something will give between these two teams and McIntosh looks poised to strike. The Chiefs have put some points on the board against some stiff competition and have a good running game, which could open up their passing game. Defensively, the Chiefs have had to contend with some of the most talented athletes in the region and state. If they play focused, they should be able to stop Stockbridge.

East Coweta (7-0) has one more game before they face their rival, the Newnan Cougars. The Indians host the Jonesboro Cardinals (5-2), a team that must not be overlooked. East Coweta has won with a balanced offensive attack and a super defense. If they force some Jonesboro mistakes, the Indians should go into their showdown with Newnan undefeated.

Fayette County travels to Tara Stadium to take on Morrow on Friday. The Tigers (4-4) are looking to finish the season on a strong note and look ready to do so. Last week, Fayette County beat North Clayton, giving Coach Clint Burton his 100th career win. This week they look to win another to give him his 101st. The tigers are also hoping to re-establish their running game with tailback Matt Owens.

Sandy Creek (2-4) played hard against Woodward Academy last Friday but lost, 7-0. The Patriots, who will be without Kedric Golston for the remainder of the season, would like a win to cheer up their fallen comrade. Sandy Creek travels to take on Rockdale County (3-4) and would like to see a big game from their offense, which looked great in their two wins. The patriots must win out and hope for some key losses to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Landmark Christian (4-3) is guaranteed a playoff spot at the end of the season and with a majority of the team returning next year, they are almost guaranteed to improve on their record once again. The War Eagles will travel to take on Heard County (0-7) tonight and would like to see their offense and defense run smoothly and establish some momentum as the head into the final two games of the season.

Our Lady of Mercy (4-4) gets a good measuring stick kind of game tonight as they host Walker High School, the team that gave Mercy their first varsity football win in school history. It is also the Bobcat's first ever homecoming game and the students want to give the students and coaches something to cheer about.
