School board eyes legislative proposals

By JOHN THOMPSON

The Fulton County Board of Education will vote next month on a wide variety of agenda items for the 2002 General Assembly.

Each year, the board looks at a variety of proposals before hashing out a final list to submit to local state legislators. Some of the items are routine, such as maintaining competitive salaries for employees, but others are newer initiatives the board wants to see the General Assembly consider this year.

Some of the proposals include:

Increasing the state funding for alternative programs for habitually disruptive students.

Funding full-time clinic workers in all grades.

Allowing local school systems to admit underage children who are academically and developmentally ready for kindergarten and provide appropriate state funding.

Opposing any requirement that would permit non-public school students to participate in activities that are provided to enrolled public school students.

Supporting full state funding for foreign language programs in grades K-5.

School system public relations chief Mitzi Edge said board members would look over the wide array of proposals and vote on them next month.
