Lady Tigers place fifth in state tourney By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
The Fayette County Lady Tigers fast pitch softball team finished just short of their goal of a state championship. The team made the final round of the state playoffs in Columbus after winning the area and emerging from the sectionals in Valdosta as the top seed, but fell in their first game in Columbus. The Lady Tigers first opponent was last year's champion, the Harrison Lady Hoyas, and they lost, 3-2. The team regrouped in the second game, blanking Henry County, 5-0. Their third game ended up being their final game of the season as the Lady Tigers fell to Walton, 3-2. Fayette County finished the season 30-5. They were area champs and they finished fifth in the state. The entire team contributed to their success, whether it was outstanding defensive plays, timely hits or amazing pitching performances. Bonnie Bynum threw several no-hitters and one hitters for the Lady Tigers during the season. She finished with a 28-3 record, 297 strikeouts and a 0.45 ERA. She gave up 76 hits during the season and walked only nine batters. Fayette County also got solid performances offensively from nearly everyone on the team. Ashley Logan lead the team in batting average, batting .400, hitting 32 singles and scoring 26 runs. Paige Phillips lead the team in RBIs with 23. Seven players hit over .300 for Fayette County this year. For more comprehensive stats and game summaries, visit www.eteamz.com/fayettecofastpitch .
