Fayette State Rep. Kathy Cox will seek the office of state school superintendent in the next state election.

Cox, who made the announcement this week, said she has a wealth of experience from teaching here for 15 years, and she wants to bring that experience to schools across the state.

"I have worked for several schools here and they are all wonderful schools," said Cox, who is currently teaching at McIntosh High School. "And I have seen them improve. It's a commitment on behalf of the community, parents and faculty."

Cox said state schools have been the subject of negative publicity recently, but she wants to highlight the successes in Georgia's schools also. One of her mottos will be: "Excellence is not an accident," she said.

"I feel with my experience here in Fayette County, I already know what it takes to have excellent schools."

Part of the formula for excellent schools includes a safe learning environment and well-qualified teachers, Cox said.

As a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, Cox served on the education committee, the health and ecology committee and the industry committee.
