Halloween fun coming

Main Street Fayetteville is kicking off its yearly Halloween schedule with Friday's Great Pumpkin Walk, followed by the traditional trick-or-treat activities on the square nightly through Halloween.

The events are being sponsored by Main Street and Fayette Community Hospital.

More than 2,500 elementary costumed school children, teachers and parents will travel to the historic district Friday morning to place their decorated jack-o-lanterns in pre-determined locations. The pumpkins will adorn the grounds of the Old Courthouse, City Hall, Heritage Park and the Gazebo.

As in years past, schools participating in the walk include East Fayette Elementary, Hood Avenue Elementary, Fayetteville Elementary and Springhill Elementary.

Later that evening many of the children, along with their families, will return for awards and festivities beginning at 6 p.m. at Heritage Park in the Stonewall Village county government complex. Participants will receive a "Trick or Treat on Main Street" bag of goodies and each student participating in the Pumpkin Walk will receive a certificate signed by Mayor Ken Steele, Fayette Community Hospital CEO Darrell E. Cutts, and his or her school principal.

"Trick or Treat on Main Street" will continue through Halloween evening at designated locations within the downtown district. Main Street Manager Nancy Price is encouraging citizens to come back to the square during the upcoming week.

"Children and their families are invited to visit those businesses that display the 'Trick or Treat on Main Street' poster to receive their Halloween goodies," said Price. "Businesses will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays, and many of the retail stores will also be open Saturday the 27th."

Beginning at 7 p.m. families are invited to visit the newly renovated historic Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House for the Great Georgia Ghost Tour. Tickets will be available on site for $3 for children under 12 and $5 for adults.

Professional storytellers in period costume will be available to relate some "spooky" folklore tales mixed with a little history of the house for the first part of the tour. Groups will then be escorted to the historic City Cemetery to experience the finale of the Great Georgia Ghost Tour .
