Jazz fans turn out in force

Nearly 2,000 jazz fans joined Fulton County District 7 Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards on Sept. 22 to enjoy a full evening of entertainment with Detroit's Grammy-nominated Straight Ahead and Atlanta's Jordan Dayan Trio.

The show took place at the Tom Lowe Shooting Grounds, located on Merk Road near Camp Creek Parkway.

Concertgoers relaxed on blankets and lawn chairs, with many holding candlelight picnics. As dusk fell, the music began, with the stage set up on the field used during 1996 Olympic shooting competitions.

Straight Ahead, an all-female group, performed a range of jazz during their two-hour set, demonstrating contemporary and Latin influences.

Atlanta jazz bassist Jordan Dayan opened the concert, performing with his trio.

The outdoor show was the first jazz concert organized by South Fulton Revitalization, Inc. (SFRI). The Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Department of Economic Development, and the Fulton County Arts Council provided approximately $130,000 in grant funding to SFRI this year.
