Railroad Days returns to Manchester
By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
The history of this nation was written in the development of the railroad. Able to cross the nation and connect its people with goods, services and other people, the railroad provided people with jobs as well as a sense of belonging. Through the years the use of the railroad has ebbed, but there are still many people interested in the topic, many of whom will be at Manchester Railroad Days this weekend. The annual event kicks off on Friday with a Railfan and railroad alumni reception at the Manchester Community Center on Second Avenue. The band Power will provide entertainment, playing railroad songs. This will be followed by a slide show and lecture by Allen Tuten, who will discuss the history and development of the Central of Georgia Railroad. Saturday, Railroad Days moves to a new location. The event has moved to the Manchester Mill Building on Callaway Street. There will be railroadiana displays and sales and the model train show has been expanded. There will also be a number of personal displays on the railroad and trains. Admission for the rail show on Saturday is $2 for adults and free for children under the age of 12. The Railfan observation deck will also be open until late in the evening. The deck overlooks the junction of two CSX main lines that provide plenty of activity for watchers and photographers all weekend. For more information on Railroad Days, phone 1-800-925-4529. |
