Spin-a-thon raises over $6,000 for 9-11 victims The response to the Spin-a-thon hosted by Gold's Gym of Fayette County was so overwhelming that extra bikes had to be brought in. Teams and individuals committed to ride spin cycles for four hours on Saturday to raise money for the families of firefighters, police and port authority police lost in the Sept. 11 tragedy. Each team was asked to raise a minimum of $100 through pledges and other contributions. Over $6,000 has been collected thus far and more money is still being contributed. Joe Domaleski dreamed up the idea of the event and was the main coordinator of the indoor biking session. Domaleski is an instructor for Gold's Gym and a local triathlete and cyclist who has completed the Ironman triathlon. Scenes from the Tour de France played on the wall as cyclists churned their wheels to music and cheers from onlookers. Girl Scouts volunteered to work as "runners" during the four hour event, filling water bottles and bringing snacks when needed. Some riders stayed on their bikes for four hours with only minor breaks, others swapped out with team members. Overall the event was another huge success in Gold's Gyms continuing efforts to raise money to support the rescue efforts and the victim's families. Recently Gold's Gym teamed up with the Braelinn Kroger and the Peachtree Fire Department to raise close to $4,500 in one day. The three Gold's Gyms locations are also serving as collection points for the Salvation Army. The gyms have been collecting work boots, work gloves, flashlights, batteries and money to give to the Salvation Army for the rescue efforts. The gyms are have an ongoing effort to raise money to donate to the American Red Cross. T-shirts with an American Flag and the statement "These colors will not fade or run" are also being sold at all three locations for $15 with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army.
