Lady Chiefs capture area volleyball title

Starr's Mill and McIntosh's volleyball teams had met four times during the season and the area tournament. On Tuesday night, they met for a fifth time in the area 4-AAAAA championships.

McIntosh made the finals with wins over Newnan and Starr's Mill, while the Lady Panthers had wins over North Clayton, East Coweta and Newnan to make it to the finals.

Starr's Mill started the match on Tuesday strong, taking a 9-3 lead in the first game. The Lady Chiefs answered back with six straight pooints to tie the score. The two teams were deadlocked at 11, before McIntosh scored four straight points to win the first game. The Lady Panthers started strong agian in the second game, leading 5-3 at one point and 9-6 at another. Once again the score was tied at 11, but McIntosh proved too strong in the long run and won 15-13.

The third game was the most hotly contested. Starr's Mill jumped ahead 4-, but McIntosh scored six straight points to lead, 6-4. Both teams then battled back and forth, causing lead change after lead change. The two teams found themselves tied at 15 points a piece. Allison Cheatham served up the winning points for the Lady Chiefs and Megan Bartels had one final kill in the tournament to secure the win.

Bartels, the team captain for McIntosh, held a Georgia Volleyball State Top Ten record for season kill percentage from last season, and hit another top ten record with a match kill percentage of .727 as she started out game one with four successive kills.

Both teams will advance to the sectionals this Saturday in Kennesaw and could possibly meet for a sixth time this season.
