Fairburn growth takes off By JOHN
THOMPSON
Fairburn residents may soon look back at the 1990s growth rate of 34 percent as the "good old days" of slow growth. City Administrator Tony Cox delivered a growth update to the City Council Monday night, and the results are astounding. In the report, Cox said the city has seen 500 new housing units completed in the last few month. He said the average household in the Atlanta region has 2.5 members, so Fairburn has grown by 1,250 residents since the U.S. Census figures came out last year. "We've grown another 23 percent in the last year," Cox said. But the staggering figure is that there are still 2,219 homes approved that are still in the construction phase. Using the same household numbers, 5,547 more residents will soon call the city home. "Can we go back to the way it was?" said Councilman Gene Wiggins. The biggest of the developments approved is the Durham Lakes golf community. When it is built out, it will bring nearly 1,800 of the new residents to town. Cox said he plans to update the council on all the developments in the town on a regular basis.
