Offshoot Productions announces upcoming season Fayette County-based Offshoot Productions, the south side's oldest professional theater company, promises an eclectic and exciting 2002 season. In addition to ongoing acting classes and workshops, this winter the company will present another in its series of children's participatory plays. "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz," a humorous spin on the classic tale, invites children in the audience to help Dorothy and her friends escape from the Wicked Witch of the West. The production, which will be presented in the Black Box Theater of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City between Feb. 18 and March 3, will feature a combined professional and apprentice cast. Auditions begin Dec. 2. A third "festival of theater for children" will enliven the summer with classes, camps and workshops. A new camp, Shakespeare for Young Actors, allows children and teens to explore the Bard's wit and wisdom during the production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." This Shakespearean comedy is set to run for three July weekends at Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville. The cast will largely consist of professional actors from the metro Atlanta area, with several apprentice actors filling the smaller roles. Tentatively scheduled for the fall is a two-character play, "Love Letters," which traces the lifelong relationship between childhood friends. A venue for this professional cast show has not yet been determined. Offshoot Productions, a nonprofit organization now entering its ninth season, publishes a quarterly newsletter, provides entertainment for other nonprofits, and enjoys a large membership of theater lovers and practitioners. Volunteer opportunities are plentiful. For information, phone 770-631-2362 or e-mail offshootpr@aol.com.
