U.S. founded by immigrants

I am appalled by the narrow-minded tone of a recent letter to the editor on immigrants (Frank Hyde, Oct. 3).

The strength of the United States has always been diversity not conformity. Our country was founded and built by immigrants. Intolerance of differences in clothing, religion, language and other individual traits can only divide our country.

During these difficult times, we must practice acceptance and tolerance. The recent terrorist attacks were committed by a group of extremists who do not represent the majority of law-abiding immigrants in this country.

In talking to my 5-year-old daughter about the recent events, she had a wonderful insight into the motivations of the terrorists. She said, "I get it, Mommie. Some people want everyone to be like themselves. They don't like anyone who is different."

We cannot tolerate actions of radical terrorists. However, it is also imperative that we practice acceptance of all law-abiding people regardless of their ethnic or religious background.
