Fritz: 'My only agenda is the people's business'

My name is Carol Fritz, and I am running for reelection to Post 4 of the Peachtree City Council. This is my first letter to the editor. Why? Because over the past four years I have chosen to spend my time working for our fine city rather than writing about it. When you elected me, you got a full-time representative in what is billed as a part-time position.

I am proud of my record. I have had to make some tough decisions, but that's what you elected me to do. I can assure you I do my homework and every vote I cast is based on thorough research, not special interests. My only agenda is the people's business.

To better prepare myself to represent you, I have completed numerous courses through the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia, ranging from Ethics, to Municipal Finance and Environmental Management. I have attended countless seminars on issues ranging from water, erosion control and green space to open government and smart growth. I do my homework.

I have been very active at the city, county and state level concerning water and septic issues. It is through my initiative as vice chair of the Fayette County Board of Health that the septic issues affecting Lake Edith are being addressed. This issue has been devastating to the YMCA and their summer camp programs. It has been an uphill battle, but I am committed to correcting these problems.

I sit on the board of directors of the Southern Conservation Trust, which currently manages over 600 acres of wetlands and nature areas. We are one of the largest land trusts in the Southeast. We have been able to create the Flat Creek Boardwalk, Flat Creek Nature Center and Line Creek Nature Area through donations, and partnering with the Rotary Club, Boy Scouts, and DNR. I also sit on the board of the Peachtree City Golden K Kiwanis Club.

Last fall, I initiated meetings between the school system and local officials to determine how best to use our building and site inspectors to conserve time and money by eliminating duplication of efforts and resources. This continues to be a work in progress, which has already proven to be beneficial to all entities.

My concern for the small businesses in town led to the establishment of the "Salute to Small Business Week," which blossomed into a partnership between the city, Chamber of Commerce, Development Authority, Clayton State College and the Small Business Association. This first year's event has been declared a success by the Fayette County Development Authority.

My husband and I have seen a lot of changes in Peachtree City in the 10 years that we have lived here. As one of our late presidents said, "Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past or the present, are certain to miss the future." It is to your elected officials that you look to properly manage that change and to ensure that 10 years from now you will still want to call Peachtree City home.

Effective leadership involves consensus building and compromise. Often the decisions we are forced to make are not black and white. Sometimes we have to go with the lesser of two evils, but even those decisions can be transformed into something positive with dedicated representatives at the helm.

I offer that dedication. I am committed to Peachtree City and her future. I ask you to let me continue to work full-time for you and our fine city. Please contact me at 770-631-1641, or carolfritz@mindspring.com.

Carol A. Fritz
