PTC Classic road race needs volunteers

The Peachtree City Classic Road race needs volunteers to help stage another successful event this year. "We simply couldn't do it without the volunteers who help out every year," said Volunteer Director Teri Besch. "They are crucial to our success."

Helpers are needed at the finish line and as timers and monitors along the course itself on the race date, Saturday, Oct. 13. There is also a goody bag stuffing session on Oct. 12 and volunteers are also needed to hand out t-shirts and refreshments to the race finishers.

The race attracts over 3,000 runners and walkers every year. This is the 20th year of the race and is also the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Peachtree City Running Club. The race is also the Road Runners Club of America's choice, once agian, for the 15K National Championship.

The event is three races. The 15K Open Race begins at 9:10 a.m. and is limited to the first 1,500 applicants. It is ranked by USA Track and Field among the largest 15K's in the nation. A men's 5K will begin at 9 a.m. and a women's 5K will begin at 8:50 a.m. Each 5K race will be run on a separate course through the paths of Peachtree City. Each race is limited to 800 applicants.

"Our club puts much of the profts from this event back into the community through scholarships to local high school runners, free summer kid's fun runs, free weekly track meets, money to local track programs, equipment donations to local police and EMT's and ther forms of local support," said Race Director Carolyn Gulick.

If you would like to rac, visit your local recreation department or sports store for an application or visit www.ptcrc.com. If you would like to be a volunteer, phone Teri Besch at 770-487-9215 or e-mail her at goofy1969@aol.com.
