Lots to do in and around Atlanta this weekend

There aren't as many festivals going on this weekend as last weekend, but there is still plenty to do in the Atlanta area.

The High Museum of Art unveils its new exhibit, "Pictures Tell The Story: Ernest C. Withers." The High Museum of Art Folk Art and Photography Galleries will showcase the work of photographer Ernest C. Withers through Jan. 26.

Withers began his career as a self-employed photographer in Memphis, Tenn. in the late 1940s. He was in a unique position to witness and record an insider's perspective of the Civil Rights Movement, the birth of rock 'n' roll, Little Rock's Central High School's first day of integration, the Memphis sanitation workers' strike and images of Martin Luther King Jr.'s funeral.

Admission to the Folk Art and Photography Galleries is free. They are near the Peachtree Center MARTA station and are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and until 9 p.m. first Thursdays. Phone 770-557-6940.

For a peek into the history of the world, Fernbank will present the new IMAX film "Lost Worlds: Life in the Balance." The film, narrated by Harrison Ford, sweeps viewers from the poles to the tropics and takes them on an expedition to the remote and mysterious "Lost World" region of Venezuela.

The film explores the ruins of Tikal, a Mayan city that has remained abandoned for a thousand years. It will be shown at Fernbank through March 22. Show times are Monday-Saturday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Sundays at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. Phone 404-370-0019.

If being whisked away to a lost Mayan city is too much for you, the eighth biennial quilt show sponsored by the East Cobb Quilters Guild will take place this weekend at the Cobb County Civic Center. This year's theme, "Georgia Celebrates Quilts - Horse, Home, Hearth," will feature 300 quilts and wearable art items from throughout the state. There will be door prizes, a silent auction and a merchant mall featuring fabric and quilt-related items. A full size quilt and a sewing machine will be raffled. The show will run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6. Phone 770-650-6515.

If you'd like to get out of the Atlanta area this weekend, one place you could go is Plains, Ga. for the fifth annual Plains Peanut Festival. There will be a presentation of the annual play "If These Sidewalks Could Talk" Thursday-Saturday at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.

Saturday's events will start with a 5K race and one-mile fun run and will be followed by the second annual Plains Peanut Festival Recipe Contest. There will also be entertainment throughout the weekend and a Sunday School service at Maranatha Baptist taught by former President Jimmy Carter. Phone 229-824-5445 or visit www.plains.org.

Whether you're into photographs, peanuts, quilts or lost Mayan cities, there is something for you and your family to enjoy this weekend.
