Qualifier wins PTC Tennis Tournament

The USTA Women's Challenger Event at the Peachtree City Tennis Center had a number of surprises over the weekend.

By Friday, only one seeded player was left. Saturday, two players who had to win qualifying matches to enter the tournament faced off in the semi-finals and Sunday the top seeded doubles team fell in the finals.

Su Wei Hsieh won the singles portion of the tournament with wins over Lisa McShea Thursday, 6-0, 6-1; Jana Nejedly Friday, 6-3, 6-1; over Kelly McCain Saturday, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, and Marie Eve Pelletier Sunday, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Hsieh had just recently turned pro and had to win a spot in the tournament through qualifying matches. Her opponent in the final, Pelletier, won matches against Kristen Schlukebir, 6-1, 6-2; top seeded Allison Bradshaw, 6-2, 7-6, and Jessica Fernandez, 6-2. 6-4.

The doubles team of Bradshaw and Jennifer Embry won the doubles title with a win over the team of Julie Pullin and Trudi Musgrave, 7-6, 6-2. Bradshaw and Embry got wins over Hsieh and her partner Chin Wei Chan Thursday, 7-6, 6-3; Nejedly and her partner Tatiana Perebiynis Friday, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, and Alyssa Cohen and Elizabeth Schmidt Saturday, 6-2, 6-2. Pullin and Musgrave's road to the doubles final included wins over Ilke Gers and Tracey O'Connor, 6-1, 6-4; Svetlana Krivencheva and Karin Miller, 6-1, 6-1, and Tanner Cochran and Schlukebir, 6-0, 6-0.
