Local boy heads to MLS Cup

One local skilled soccer player who participated in the Kick for a Million challenge at the Got Milk? 3-v-3 Soccer Shootout is one step closer to becoming a millionaire.

Ten-year-old Collin Mallon of Peachtree City was the single winner in the Tony Meola Soccer Interactive Challenge at the shootout regional final in Knoxville, Tenn. Aug. 24-25. Mallon will now advance to the finals at the MLS Cup 2001 in Columbus, Ohio Oct. 21, where he will compete for a $1 million prize.

Just like the hundreds of other contestants who advanced to the regional competition in Knoxville, Collin won his local metro Atlanta competition, which was conducted in Hampton, Ga. Aug. 11. He competed among hundreds of contestants in Knoxville who tested their soccer skill against the Tony Meola Soccer Interactive Challenge by shooting a ball at a backdrop with targets of varying point values. The highest scoring person at each of the seven regional finals will advance to the final at the MLS Championship Cup 2001.

Other winners from the Peachtree City/Fayette area that also advanced to the regional final included Chris Ward of Peachtree City, Erin Emerson of Fayetteville and Jack Galbraith of Tyrone.

Tony Meola, goalie of the Kansas City Wizards and the latest "milk mustache celebrity," will greet the eight regional finalists in a soccer workshop at the MLS championship game before they take the field for a chance to kick their way to the bank. At the hands-on clinic, Meola will share his soccer tips and techniques with the potential millionaires to help secure their $1 million success. The $1 million goal involves kicking a soccer ball 75 feet through a 19-inch target.

Just like Tony Meola, Mia Hamm and more than 100 other celebrities and athletes, the regional winners from the Soccer Shootout Tour will be sporting their own milk mustaches in an upcoming ad in a sports magazine. In addition to the ad, regional finalists will also be featured on the milk Web site, www.whymilk.com.
