Southside Girls Participate in the Amateur Softball Association's 2001 Gold National Tournament

It's a dream of any fast-pitch softball player, and the chances of reaching this level of competition are rare. The ASA 2001 Girls' Gold 18-U Fast-Pitch National Tournament took place July 30-Aug. 5 at the Lost Mountain Softball Complex in Marietta, Ga.

Two softball players from the Southside participated this year. Meghan Mulcahy, a senior at McIntosh High School, played with the Atlanta Vipers Softball Club, and Chrissy Lunsford, a senior at Sandy Creek High School, played with the Georgia Elite Softball Club. These girls have participated in these clubs for the past three years honing their softball skills for this type of event. Mulcahy is an infielder concentrating on catching, pitching and the corners. Lunsford concentrates on the outfield but is also an exceptional infielder.

"Fast-pitch is a definitely a commitment. To get to this level, you have to give up a lot of things because you practice almost every day, and you travel almost every weekend from March through July to play competitively. Playing at the gold-level is a chance of a lifetime for someone who really wants to play softball in college," said Mulcahy.

The ASA Gold level fast-pitch tournament is the most competitive softball association. Over 70 teams, from 23 different states, participated. Over 200 college coaches watched and sought out new players.
