Cross country season heats up with Berry meet

The McIntosh boys and girls cross country teams have run on the state meet course at Carrollton High School twice in the past week. In last week's Twilight Invitational, McIntosh faced off against some of the contenders for the state title in AAAAA, including teams from Brookwood, Collin's Hill and North Gwinnett. The teams also traveled to Carrollton this past Tuesday and faced Mt. Zion, Jonesboro, Hiram, and Carrollton.

The girls placed fourth at the Twilight meet behind Collins Hill, Brookwood and North Gwinett. In this week's meet, the Lady Chiefs placed first. Dana Van Winkle was first in both races with times of 20:41 at the Twilight and 22:03 on Tuesday. Judy Thomasson placed fifth at the Twilight meet with a time of 21:31, while Elizabeth Gardner placed tenth with a time of 21:57. Their order was reversed on Tuesday with Gardner placing second at 23:05 and thomasson placing third with a time of 23:19.

Rounding out the top eight for the Lady Chiefs at the Twilight Invitational were Tabitha Lowey, 49th, 23:41; Megan Spencer, 57th, 23:56; Tori Fratto, 61st, 23:59; Nicole Degner, 63rd, 24:03 and Mary Crofton, 69th, 24:12. In Tuesday's meet Crofton placed fourth with a time of 23:30, Degner placed sixth with a time of 24:21, Brittlynn Hall placed seventh with a time of 24:30 and Lowey placed eighth with a time of 24:32. Alexandra eugulet placed ninth for the Lady Chiefs at 24:32 and Laura Massengale placed 10th at 24:42.

The boys squad placed sixth at the Twilight race and first in Tuesday's meet. Shaun Emery was first in both races with times of 16:55 last Thursday, which was good enough for a third place finish, and 17:39 on Tuesday, which led to a first place finish. Randy Hutchinson placed 18th at twilight with time of 18:18 and second on Tuesday at 18:50. Anthony Collier Quinn was 30th at Twilight at 18:46 and fourth on Tuesday at 19:24. Michael Bowman was 55th at twilight at 19:25 and third on Tuesday at 19:13. John Powers and Charlie Gonzalez placed 61st and 65th respectively at twilight with times of 19:34 and 19:41. Rounding out the top 10 for the Chiefs on Tuesday were Mohammed Momin, seventh, 20:02, Adam McWilliams, eighth, 20"02 and Shae Myles, 10th, 20:23.

The Chiefs, along with Fayette County, Starr's Mill, and nearly every other team in AAAAA is heading to the Darlington/Berry Invitational at Berry College this Saturday. It is a big race that lets every team know where they stand this seaosn and how hard they will have to work to finish on top. There will be complete results for all local teams in Wednesday's paper.
