Brown volunteers for post, cautiously

[Editor's note: Peachtree City mayoral candidate Steve Brown received an invitation from Mayor Bob Lenox to serve on a voluntary committee. This is Brown's reply.]

Dear Mayor Lenox:

On Aug. 20, I received your request on behalf of the City Council for participation on a citizen committee responsible for educating the public on the five referendum proposals. I thank you for considering me for the committee.

In fairness, I must tell you that I have some reservations regarding some of the proposals. I may not be able to commit to an open endorsement for all of the referendum projects. I can, however, willingly support some of the items within the referendum. I also will promise to maintain an open mind regarding all of the projects and to listen in an unbiased manner throughout the committee discussions.

I do not believe that opposing viewpoints about the referendum projects will hinder the committee's ability to educate the public. In fact, I feel that educating the citizens of Peachtree City will be more effective if both sides of these issues are represented.

If I am elected in November, I will be accountable for the financial standing of the city as a whole. Obviously, there are some vital projects looming in future years and the economy is falling off at a rapid pace, possibly affecting future tax revenues.

I believe that it is wise to view all new expenditures with a keen eye geared toward the future financial condition of the city and to not take any unnecessary risks in the midst of a declining economy.

If I am still welcome despite my reluctance to provide blanket support and endorsement, I will gladly serve and I will be attendance at the Aug. 27 meeting.

Steve Brown

Peachtree City
