Movies

Opening Friday

Bubble Boy A boy who has spent his life in a bubble, due to a form of immune deficiency, must travel cross country to stop the woman he loves from marrying the wrong man. The previews look funny, but people are already griping about picking on people who live in bubbles. It's just a movie, people. Relax. Rated PG-13.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Have you seen any of Kevin Smith's movies, like Clerks, Mallrats, or Chasing Amy? If you have, you know Jay and Silent Bob, if you have not, you won't care about this movie. The movie is very funny, the cameos and Hollywood in-jokes are outstanding and the language is very, very raw. I thought this was Smith's best movie. It had a budget and a clear idea of what it wanted to be. That is a rare quality in films today. Rated R.

John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars Ice Cube and Natasha Henstridge star in this film about people awakening the ghosts of an ancient Martian civilization 200 years in the future. It's a horror movie and hopefully it is more like "Halloween" and less like "Vampires." Rated R.

Summer Catch Freddie Prinze Jr. stars as a poor boy playing minor league baseball. He falls in love with a rich girl, despite her father's protests. Matthew Lillard plays the funny guy on Prinze's baseball team. I'm willing to bet Prinze makes the majors and gets the girl. Rated PG-13.

Now Playing

American Outlaws This film features some of the hottest young actors in Hollywood, according to Tiger Beat anyway. The film is about the Jesse James gang and, darn it all if they're not the most likable criminals ever. Rated PG-13.

American Pie 2 The cast of the first film is reunited in this sequel set after the first year of college. The original was funny but it was not as good as all the hype claimed that it was. We'll see how the sequel turns out. Expect lots of sexually themed humor. Rated R.

America's Sweethearts What a cast! Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack and "America's Sweetheart" Julia Roberts all star in this film. The story revolves around a high profile couple's breakup and the assistant (Roberts) falling in love with the brokenhearted guy. Rated PG-13.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin A love story based on a historical novel set in Greece during World War II. Nicolas Cage plays an Italian soldier who falls in love with a Greek woman, who is engaged to a Greek fisherman. This is directed by John Madden, who directed Shakespeare In Love. Rated R.

Jurassic Park III This is a monster movie, plain and simple. Sam Neill returns and William H. Macy comes along for the ride. There are a slew of new dino foes and a lot of people playing dino chow. This is a fun movie, worth a matinee viewing. Rated PG-13.

Legally Blonde Reese Witherspoon stars as blonde bombshell out to get her man back after he dumps her and goes off to Harvard Law School. This looks really cute and Reese Witherspoon is one of the more impressive young actresses out there right now. Rated PG-13.

Osmosis Jones If you're a fan of bodily humor then this is the film for you. This animated film set in the body of a man who ate a bad meatball, played by Bill Murray, stars the voice talent of Laurence Fishburne, Chris Rock and David Hyde Pierce. It looks hilarious and the possibilities are endless. Rated PG.

Original Sin A noir mystery set in the exotic world of Cuba at the turn of the century. Luis Antonio Vargas, a wealthy coffee merchant, arranges a marriage through the mail but discovers that the woman who arrives to share his house is trouble. It's a story about the dangerous and sometimes lethal power of love. Antonio Banderas, Angelina Jolie, Thomas Jane, Allison Mackie. Rated R.

Planet of the Apes Mark Wahlberg stars as an astronaut who crashes into the Planet of the Apes. This is different from the original and directed by Tim Burton. I hear it is a great film. Rated PG-13.

The Princess Diaries A girl goes from dork to princess in this film by the director of Pretty Woman. Julie Andrews stars as the girl's royal grandmother. This is very popular with families. Rated G.

Rat Race Several teams compete in a race for $2 million while people in Las Vegas bet on which team will win. Cuba Gooding Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Seth Green and Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) star. Rated PG-13.

Rush Hour 2: The fastest hands in the East team up again with the biggest mouth in the West when legendary martial arts daredevil Jackie Chan teams with comedic powerhouse Chris Tucker. Should be fun. Rated PG-13.

Spy Kids: Special Edition I am a big fan of this movie. They are re-releasing it with additional footage and some new special effects. This is a fun movie, packed with action and a good message about being a family. Rated PG.

The Others A thriller set in England during World War II. Nicole Kidman awaits her husband's return from the war in a haunted house, while her children and the staff are terrorized by the house's former inhabitants. Rated PG-13.

Also Playing

A Knight's Tale This was a great summer movie. A squire replaces his dead master in jousting tournaments and becomes a knight. This film had wonderful action scenes, a lot of humor and a good heart. Rated PG-13.

Along Came A Spider Another film based on the books about Detective Alex Cross, played by Morgan Freeman. This film, like "Kiss The Girls," pits Cross against a brilliant serial killer. I'm sure this is a great way to escape the summer heat. Rated R.

Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles "That's not a knife, this is a knife." It's still funny after all these years. If you are looking for a family oriented comedy, this is your best bet. Rated PG.

Evolution It never played at Tinseltown, but this comedy from Ivan Reitman looked good. It is about aliens coming to Earth and evolving at an alarming rate. David Duchovny, Julianne Moore and Orlando Jones star. Rated PG-13.
