Every season should start this well. The Fayette County High School Lady Tiger varsity softball team opened the season with two wins last week and then finished in second place at the Jordan Invitational in Columbus.

The Lady Tigers faced East Coweta in the season opener last Wednesday and won 5-2. The team then faced Riverdale on Friday and won 15-0. The games were good tuneups for the tournament, which featured a number of top programs from nearly every classification in the state.

Fayette County's first opponent in the tournament was Pacelli and the Lady Tigers won 7-0. Bonnie Bynum was the winning pitcher and had 12 strikeouts, while Stephanie Norman provided a huge chunk of the offense with five RBIs. Norman hit a grand slam and then drove in another run later in the game. Katie Gaspierik went three for three at the plate. The next game saw the Lady Tigers defeat Jones County, 3-2. Bynum was the winning pitcher again, producing seven strikeouts and not giving up an earned run. Allison Stubbs was the offensive hero for Fayette County, coming up with a clutch double in the fifth inning which drove in two runs.

The Lady Tigers then lost to Hardaway, 1-0 in extra innings. Bynum was the losing pitcher but produced 12 strikeouts and did not give up an earned run. Fayette County then faced Oconee County and won 3-1. Bynum gave up an earned run and struck out eight batters, while Ashley Logan and Becky Carter each drove in a run. Logan went two for four at the plate and Carter went two for three.

Stephanie Phillips pitched in the Lady Tigers 11-1 victory over Rockdale County. She struck out two Rockdale batters and gave up one earned run. Paige Phillips drove in four runs while Norman drove in two.

Coach Jill Joiner also recognized the outstanding defensive play of freshman catcher Ashley Holcombe. "Ashley made a lot of key plays over the weekend," said Joiner. "She picked off a few runners at first base, turned some double plays and made a great diving catch."

The Lady Tigers were scheduled to face McIntosh last night and are scheduled to travel to take on North Clayton tomorrow at 5 p.m. North Clayton may not have enough players to field a team however, so check The Citizen's website on Thursday for an update.
