The story of "Hansel and Gretel" is a familar one, reminding the reader to not mark the path home with bread crumbs because birds will eat the crumbs and you will get lost.

The story also warns about taking candy from strangers and tells the reader how to get rid of a witch who is planning on cooking you. Now the story comes to life in Fayette-Coweta Family Theatre's production, which begins tomorrow at Sams Auditorium.

In this musical rendition of the popular fairy tale, Phillip Davis plays Hansel, while Kimberly Crawley portrays his sister, Gretel. The Witch, who is the owner of the Gingerbread House that lures the lost youngsters into her trap, is played by Kim Shelton. The musical also adds some new elements to the tale. Hansel and Gretel encounter the magical Sandman, the wise old Owl, the Dew Drop Princess, Echo, a practical Joker, and a nasty Troll, before meeting up with the Witch and her two Henchmen, Frick and Frack.

"This production is a wonderful way for families to celebrate the end of summer together," said director Tammy Barton. "The Story of Hansel and Gretel" was wrtten by Vera Morris and the music and lyrics were written by Bill Francouer.

On top of seeing a fun show, audience members will have the opportunity to visit Hansel and Gretel's Memory Hut before and after the show as well as at intermission. There they will find inexpensive items to remember their time in the deep forest with Hansel and Gretel, including magic wands, candy houses, jeweled rings, gingerbread erasers and master face painters. All items in the memory hut will be $2 or less.

"The Story of Hansel and Gretel" will be presented Thursdays, Aug. 16 and 23 at 6:30 p.m., Fridays, Aug. 17 and 24 at 7 p.m. and Saturdays, Aug. 18 and 25 at 3 and 7 p.m. Admission at the door is $8 for adults and $6 for children, students and seniors.
