Starr's Mill volleyball team hosts jamboree

The Starr's Mill High School volleyball team and Coach Dottie Licciardi played host Saturday to area varsity teams at a jamboree play day.

Coach Licciardi said the annual event helps coaches and players prepare for the upcoming volleyball season.

"This event is primarily aimed at improving the level of play for southside Atlanta teams," said Licciardi. "It also gives teams with a lot of new players a chance to get the kinks out and get used to playing together before the season starts."

A total of 10 teams attended the event, including East Coweta, Baldwin County and Mary Persons, as well as the other three high schools in Fayette County.

Starr's Mill finished the day with a 4-0 record. The Lady Panthers dominated their pool, scoring 15-11 and 15-5 against East Coweta; 15-9 and 15-11 against Heritage; 15-12 and 15-8 against Sandy Creek High School, and finishing 15-12 and 15-4 to beat Baldwin County High School.

Leading the Lady Panthers with high marks in three categories was senior Cari DePalma with nine kills, 29 serve receives to target and seven digs. Other key players included junior hitter Erin Houtaling with eight kills. Scoring nine service aces each were junior Lauren Dillon and sophomore Stephanie Dazey. Freshman setter Nikki Patriarca led the team with 14 assists and fellow freshman Shelley MacBean was credited with three solo blocks.

Licciardi said she hopes to improve on last season's record in AAAAA area, which took the Lady Panthers all the way to the Elite Eight in state competitions.
