Fayette County Swimming Hall of Fame inducts new members

The Southside Seals, the premier masters swim team in the south metro Atlanta area, sponsor an annual award to recognize outstanding accomplishments in swimming by members of the Fayette County swimming community. They recently named the Fayette County swimmers of the year, which is awarded annually to the outstanding male and female swimmers of the previous year. The award is open to members of USS, high school and recreation teams. The Southside Seals also named several swimmers to their Fayette County Swimming Hall of Fame.

Brittany M. Stevens of Peachtree City was honored as the outstanding female swimmer for 2000-2001. Stevens, daughter of Dave and RoseAnn Stevens, is a stident at Starr's Mill High School. A member of the swim team, she was a 2001 Georgia State High School Championship finalist in the 100 yard butterfly and a consolation finalist in the 50 yard freestyle.

Stevens is also a member of the Southern Crescent Aquatic Team and a member of the Peachtree Pacers. She was a 2000 Georgia Park and Recreation state champion in the 50 yard butterfly and the 100 yard individual medley for the Pacers and was a USS Regional finalist in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle as well as the 200 yard butterfly for SCAT.

Kenneth S. Jubb of Peachtree City was honored as the outstanding male swimmer for 2000-2001. The son of Steven and Carmen Jubb and a member of the Starr's Mill High School swim team, Jubb won four gold medals at the 2001 Fayette County High School swimming championships and was a qualifier in the 50 yard freestyle for the Georgia State High School championships.

Jubb is also a member of SCAT and was a USS Sectional qualifier in the 50 yard freestyle. He was named to the Principal's list at Starr's Mill and is an active member of student government, Key Club and Optimist Club. He is also a member of Boy Scouts of America and is a candidate for Eagle Scout.

Three swimmers were also inducted into the Fayette County Swimming Hall of Fame this year. The award recognizes lifetime achievement by swimmers and coaches as residents of Fayette County or as members of a Fayette County based team.

Caren Betts was inducted for her accomplishments as a coach. She coached a Park District team in Illinois while in high school and college, leading the team to several state championships. After college she coached a t a high school in Illinois and led that team to four consecutive conference championships. She left coaching for nine years and moved to Peachtree City where she started a family. She became involed in coaching the Peachtree Pacers, a summer swimming program, and eventually started the Southern Crescent Aquatic Team.

Over the last 12 years, the team has grown from a dozen swimmers to over 200 swimmers, many of which have gone to win state championships. She was named US Georgia Coach of the Year last year and has served as a Board Member of the Georgia Swim Coaches Association. She was a driving force for the building of the Kedron Aquatic Center and continues to be involved with the success of many of the county's swimmers.

Kevi Thiem Schram was inducted into the Hall for her accomplishments as a swimmer. She began swimming at eight years old and was a meber of the Peachtree Pacers team. She began swimming for the Tallman Pools swim team and Swim Atlanta where she was a USS state champion and was a USS Georgia All Star for seven years. She held Georgia USS records in the 1,650 yard and 1,500 meter freestyle and represented Georgia at the USS Junior National swimming championships from 1984-1988. She was also part of a relay team that swam the English Channel at the age of 13.

As a swimmer for fayette County High School, Schram was the 1987 Georgia State High School champion in the 500 yard freestyle and was the first state champion in swimming from Fayette County. She swam for the University of North Carolina - Charlotte and Georgia State University in Colleg and was named to the Dixie Zone Top 10 Times list several times as a Masters swimmer.

Steve Justice was the final person inducted into the Hall this year. Justice began swimmin gin high school. He attended Woodward Academy, which had two second place finishes and one third place finish in the Georgia State High School swimming championships while he was there. Individually he was a metro and state championship finalist each year. Justice then attended Georgia Tech, where he was a four year letterman and four year conference finalist for the swim team. At graduation he was listed second on the Tech All-Time Best Times list and was named to the 1980 ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Justice began swimming in Masters Swimming in 1981 where he has established himself as a perennial state champion, state record holder, Dixe Zone Champion, national championship qualifier and national finalist. In 2000, he was named a USMS Relay All-American. Justice was also an influence coaching. He and Dick McSherry started the Peachtree Pacers. Justice was the head coach from 1976-1978 and led the team to their first undefeated season in 1978. He has been an assistant coach at Woodward Academy and most recently at Sandy Creek High School.
