Plant will generate pollution

As residents of Fayette County, we are outraged over the site proposed by Williams Co., for the Fulton Energy Center, a 21-story, 1023-megawatt power plant (one of the largest in the country). Williams is seeking to spot-zone the site, changing it to M2-Heavy Industrial. The property is on Peters Road, between Ga. highways 92 and 138 (on the Fulton-Fayette county line).

The Fulton Energy Center is not in the best interests of the citizens of the Southside. Locating a large industrial power plant in the heavily populated south metro area would be unconscionable. The plant would negatively affect our quality of life, health, and environment as well as property values.

As you know, the Atlanta area is an EPA non-attainment zone. Consequently, Fayette County is unable to proceed with much-needed highway improvements. How can the government allow the addition of a significant source of nitrous oxide and other non-attaining pollutants?

Williams argues they will abate pollution at their Stockbridge facility. A trade-off that injures a larger segment of the population is neither a fair nor prudent quid pro quo. If Stockbridge is in the Atlanta non-attainment area, why not demand they not only drop their plans for the Fulton Energy Center but abate pollution in Stockbridge as well? Williams should be encouraged to build facilities in rural areas where the personal impact would be less injurious.

Please join the other political leaders and citizens of our community in stopping Fulton Energy Center.

Robert and Joyce Lester
