Fall sports get underway this weekend with a preseason of sorts.

Whether your sport is football or volleyball, the local high school athletic teams are starting their 2001 campaigns, with softball scheduled to kick off next Wednesday and cross-country beginning at the end of the month.

For the football fans, Sandy Creek will host Fayette County tonight for a scrimmage at 7 p.m. Sandy Creek made the state playoffs last year but has graduated several key players from last year's squad, while Fayette County is coming off a less-than-stellar season. This scrimmage will give coaches and fans a chance to see how the team has developed during the offseason as well as an opportunity to see some new faces.

Starr's Mill High School will host a volleyball jamboree Saturday and all of the Fayette County schools will be represented. Other teams participating will be East Coweta, Newnan, Lovejoy, Baldwin and Mary Persons. The schools will be divided into two pools and each school will play the teams in their pool once. There will be no championship round. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
