If you are a Fayette County resident and you didn't have a calendar, you would always know it is time to send the kids back to school after the Last Fling celebration in Peachtree City.

If you did that this year, your child's perfect attendance record for the year would already be broken.

The 12th annual Last Fling will take place Saturday, Aug. 11 in the parking lot of the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, otherwise known as Shakerag Knoll, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. School for Fayette County residents begins this Friday.

Last Fling features games, rides, entertainment, food and fun for children of all ages. All of the games and rides are free, with the exception of the rock climbing wall, which is $3 a climb. Other favorites returning to the event this year are the Moon Walk and the train ride. There is a new attraction this year as well: The Ironman obstacle course and slide attraction. The course is inflatable, 20 feet high and features an 18-foot-high slide.

There will be many games on hand as well including a soccer challenge that tests speed and accuracy.

Last Fling also promises entertainment every year and this year is no different. Rachel Ferguson's dancers will perform, as will the Peachtree City Twirlers. New to the event this year will be performances from Pia Ugante's voice students. Ugante is a voice instructor for the Peachtree City Recreation Department.

As always there will be a plethora of food and prizes. Food booths featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, snow cones, cotton candy and other carnival fare will be run by Scouts, sports organizations and children's charities.

Every child admitted to Last Fling will receive a ticket and will be eligible for the grand prize drawing. The prize this year will be a bicycle and helmet from Bicycles Unlimited donated by the Peachtree City Youth Triathlon. There will also be many prizes of sports equipment given away during the event.

The PTC Fire Department's Freddie the Fire Truck, will be on the scene along with one of the city's fire engines for the children to explore and to learn about fire safety. Parents will have the opportunity to have their children's fingerprints and personal ID recorded as part of a comprehensive safety ID program sponsored by the PTC Police Community Outreach Task Force. Children's safety helmets also will be checked and adjusted for maximum safeguard when worn while a child is engaged in biking, skating or riding a scooter.

Volunteers are still needed for this year's Last Fling. Interested parties must be 14 years old or older and willing to work two-hour shifts. Volunteers will receive t-shirts and lunch coupons. For information, call the Peachtree City Recreation Department at 770-631-2542.
