Gold's Gym staging day of fun, fitness

Eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney and former Pittsburgh Steeler Greg Lloyd will both be on hand Aug. 25 to celebrate the "new" Gold's Gym in Fayetteville.

A day of events are planned, all designed to benefit the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Fayette County.

A Taste of Fayetteville Gold will showcase numerous restaurants in the Fayetteville area. The gym will host a bench competition and will have mini-demo classes throughout the day.

The Fayetteville gym, formerly Impact Health and Fitness, joined the family of Gold's Gyms earlier this year. Initially owners J.D. and Varner Holmes intended to build a new stand-alone gym. However, after purchasing Impact, the members urged the Holmeses to stay in the same location.

The couple agreed and embarked on an extensive renovation project, which has just been completed. The "new" gym boasts all-new equipment, new flooring, an expanded day care center, new locker rooms and other improvements.

Selina Gaspard, gym manager, said, "Almost every day someone comes up to me and comments on how wonderful the gym looks and how clean it is. They love it."

To celebrate the renovation, Gold's Gym Fayetteville is hosting a "re-grand opening" and, folowing a longtime Gold's Gym tradition, chose to raise money for a local group.

In the past the American Heart Association, the Children's Wish Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association, the American Cancer Society and others have been the beneficiaries of fund-raisers hosted by the gym. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are two groups the Holmeses have personally supported in the past.

Fun rides, face painting and other events will begin at 10 a.m. Aug. 25. Fayetteville restaurants will share menu selection samples from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have been invited to set up tables or displays to showcase the many activities of the groups.

Those attending the fun day, which will end at 4 p.m., will be asked to make small voluntary donations for food samples and the rides. Additionally, Gold's Gym will donate $10 to the Scouts with every new membership during the week beginning Aug. 19.

All three Fayette County Gold's Gyms will open their doors to the public throughout the week, allowing anyone over the age of 18 to work out free.

Those 14 - 18 may work out if accompanied by an adult. It is suggested that parents with younger children contact the individual gyms for day care hours.

Gold's Gym Peachtree East on Ga. Highway 54 near Publix offers beach volleyball, a tropical outdoor lagoon pool, an indoor Junior Olympic pool and racquetball courts.

The Peachtree City West location at Ga. Highway 74 and Aberdeen Parkway is open 24 hours a day Monday - Thursday, regular hours Friday - Sunday. The gym also has a newly expanded and remodeled private women's workout studio. For aerobic and fitness class schedules visit www.GoldsGym.com or stop by any of the three locations.

The gym will host a ribbon cutting with the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Monday, Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m. Representatives of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have been invited to participate in the invitation-only event.
