July is National Parks and Recreation Month and in an effort to promote it the Fayette County Recreation Department will offer Pack The Park Saturday, July 21.

The all-day event will take place at McCurry Park in Fayetteville and will offer a day of free activities for children and adults of all ages. There will be recreation demonstrations, informational booths, arts and crafts, storytelling bingo and refreshments, as well as dozens of more activities.

For the athletes in the family there will be a volleyball tournament, a GRPA adult softball tournament, a 5K race, a senior walk, and an inflatable jump. There will be silly games and water activities, limbo contests, a karaoke contest, a chalk it up contest and food eating contests as well as a big wheel rally and a scooter skills competition.

There is plenty to do once you get tired of running around. There will be a Touch a Truck exhibition, children's fingerprinting, Operation Lifesaver, exhibits and a fish pond. The day will conclude with a movie in the park at dark. Operation Lifesaver is a 45-foot tractor-trailer containing a locomotive simulator. The exhibit contains videos, exhibits and a chance to simulate driving a locomotive.

The day begins at 10 a.m. with the Big Wheel Rally for children 2-12, the 5K run for teens and adults and the one-mile walk for seniors. These events are followed by scooter games for kids and the Chalk It Up contest at 11 a.m. Dance lessons will also be offered from 11 a.m. to noon. Silly games will last from noon to 1 p.m. and food contests will follow from 1-2 p.m. Water games will be offered from 2-4 p.m. and karaoke and limbo contests will be offered from 7-9 p.m. The movie will run from 9-11 p.m.

Pack The Park runs from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the McCurry Park Softball Complex. Phone 770-461-9714.
