Girl gymnasts from Gym South of Fayetteville performed well during the American Athletic Union's National Gymnastic Meet in Atlanta recently, with two first place medals and several girls placing in overall competition.

Many of the girls were performing at these levels for the first time.

Gym South sent its level 5, 6 and Prep-Op girls to compete against girls from around the country with other top gymnasts on Team Georgia. Gym South's girls USAG team is coached by Heather Brown and Beth McDowell.

Anna Watson, a 10-year-old who attends Crossroads Christian School, competed in the Prep-Op session and finished first in the vault, third on bars and fourth all-around. Tara Taylor, 12, a Flat Rock Middle School student, also competed in Prep-Op and finished third on the balance beam and fourth all-around. Carolyn Johnston, a 13-year-old from Whitewater Middle School, competed Prep-Op and finished sixth on the vault and sixth all-around. Ashley Smith also competed Prep-Op and finished seventh all-around.

Competing in level 5 were Amanda Barton, Erica Smith and Rachel Natali. Barton, a 9-year-old Fayette Elementary student, finished second on the balance beam and fifth overall, while Smith, 10, a Brooks Elementary School student, finished ninth on the floor and bars and finished 12th overall. Natali, an 11-year-old student at Whitewater, finished second on the floor and third all-around.

Competing at level 6 were three 10-year-olds: Casey Hill, Carley Powell and Jessica Wagner. Hill, a Peeples Elementary School student, finished first on the bars, second on floor and second all-around. Powell, of Crossroads Christian Academy, finished sixth on vault and 11th all-around. Wagner, also a student at Peeples Elementary, finished fourth on the floor and sixth all-around.
