NCT presents 'The Fantasticks,' the longest running musical ever By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
The best way to get children to do something is to tell them not to do it. This is called reverse psychology and it is at the center of "The Fantasticks." "The Fantasticks" is the longest running musical and will be performed by Newnan Community Theatre beginning this weekend. The show started running in New York in 1960 and has achieved worldwide popularity. "Try To Remember," one of the songs from this well-loved show, became a hit on the radio in the 1960s and a movie starring Joey McIntyre, formerly of New Kids on the Block, was recently made. The story focuses on Matt and Luisa, two adolescents who have been separated by a wall for their entire lives. The wall is a device placed there by their mothers to insure that they will fall in love. When the two youngsters have fallen for each other, the mothers approach the mysterious El Gallo, the narrator of the story, to stage an abduction of Luisa so that Matt can rescue her. El Gallo obliges, Matt rescues Luisa, they fall in love and they live happily ever after. Not so fast. Soon, Matt and Luisa find that living with someone is not the same as adoring someone and, both bored with the relationship, they bitterly break up and go off searching for adventure. Will the young lovers reunite? To find out, you'll have to catch a performance of "The Fantasticks" at Newnan Community Theatre. The show runs Friday-Sunday through July 22. There will also be performances Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students.
