Open Door Baptist presents The Bishops August 3

Open Door Baptist Church in Senoia will present its third gospel concert of the year with a performance by The Bishops scheduled for Friday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m.

Doors open at 6 p.m. A love offering will be accepted.

Natives of Waco Ky., the Bishops began singing 17 years ago and have appeared on several national television shows, including "Nashville Now," "Music City Tonight," and "Praise the Lord" on the Trinity Broadcast Network. They also have made appearances on many of the Gaither Homecoming videos and other concerts.

The vocal combination of The Bishops is comprised of tenor Kenny Bishop and his older brother, Mark, who handles the lead vocals, and their father, Kenneth, who rounds out the trio with his baritone part. Musically, the group is assisted by utility musician Carl Williams Jr., who plays several instruments and also adds the fourth vocal part to the group's trademark "front porch singing."

"Growing up, our family would gather out on the front porch in the early evenings and sit around singing," Mark says. "We did not have any instruments. We just sang. That's really how we got started, so it only seems fitting that we share that style of music with our audiences."

Because they are from east central Kentucky where bluegrass music is popular, their musical style in the early days had more of a bluegrass flavor than their current sound, which is rather diversified. Regardless of style, The Bishops say they are fully aware of the necessity to distinctly convey the message of the Gospel with each song they record and perform.

"We have a standard to uphold," Kenny explains. "We have to keep progressing and improving but we can't abandon the message. We don't want to shine brighter than the message or the Man whose message we carry. We'll take the avenues that are provided and do our best to spread the News."

Resident song writer Mark Bishop wrote eight of the songs featured on the groups newest recording from Cathedral Records, "Great Things," which is a mixture of traditional Southern gospel music and Christian country.
