Rehearsals underway for interactive 'Tale of Sleeping Beauty'

Offshoot Productions' summer musical presentation, "A Tale of Sleeping Beauty," is currently in rehearsal for its opening July 20.

This retelling of a cherished children's story boasts a talented cast that includes Jen King and Emily Clifton, sharing the role of Beauty; Jeremy Steadman and Don Jenkins sharing the role of the King; Tom Flaherty as a rather timid Prince; Joey Waldrop as the Giant holding the Prince captive; Kimbo Daniel and Katy Jenkins, sharing the role of Glenda, the evil fairy; and Melissa Hamilton as a very frustrated Mayor, who can't believe the entire town has deserted to escape the fairy's curse.

Kathy Gillcrist, who portrays the Queen (Beauty's mother), brings to the production years of professional experience in plays and improvisational theater. In addition to teaching drama in Gwinnett County, this year she has performed in Romeo and Juliet at the Square Globe Theater, The Tempest with Atlanta Classical Theater, and several murder mystery shows at Dave And Buster's.

Director Susan M. Steadman, Ph.D., said she is amazed at how well the cast and staff, consisting of theater professionals and apprentices, have created a true ensemble. "I've rarely seen a group come together this quickly in rehearsal," she said. "Everyone is entirely supportive of everyone else, and rehearsals are a delight."

An audience participatory play in which children from the audience come on stage to help the characters, "Beauty" will be performed at the LaFayette Educational Center, 205 LaFayette Ave., Fayetteville, July 20 - 29. Curtain times are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. Two special daytime shows will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25 and Thursday, July 26.

Tickets are $5 each, with a one-dollar discount when a child shows his or her library summer reading program folder (or, in the case of Fayette County, his or her "press card") to the ticket seller. Groups of 15 or more may take advantage of the $3 group rate, with payment in advance. Tickets will be available after July 9 at the Peachtree City Library and the Fayette County Library in Fayetteville.
